On Jordan's Stormy Banks

On Jordan's stormy banks I stand,
and cast a wishful eye
to Canaan's fair and happy land,
where my possessions lie.
Refrain:
I am bound for the promised land,
I am bound for the promised land;
oh, who will come and go with me?
I am bound for the promised land.

O'er all those wide extended plains
shines one eternal day;
there God the Son forever reigns,
and scatters night away. (Refrain)

  • On Jordan's Stormy Banks #443 1:33

Matthew 3
1 In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,

2 And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
5 Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan,

6 And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.

Worship Suggestion:
The sound file is looped.
1. As the song plays the first time, make remarks the importance of reflecting

on the holy place of the Bible called the Jordan River. John the Baptist fulfilled

his ministry there as the forerunner of the Messiah, and the Baptizer of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River. Emphasize that a spiritual tradition of Christianity refers to the Jordan River as a symbol of the Promised Land of the Old Testament, and as the starting place of the New Covenant, for all of God’s people, sealed for all eternity by Jesus. When we sing of being bound for the Promised Land, it is a metaphor of our journey to the promised land of Heaven. When we reach the shores of the Promised Land of Heaven that will be a glorious day.
2. As the song plays the second time, read the scripture from Matthew 3 and Revelation 21:1-7.Let the song end.
3. When the song restarts, sing Verses 1 - 2 together.
4. Prayer and Meditation.
